The long cold-store shed where the shore road bends inland, with a yard gate on a sticking track and four night-shift workers waiting upstairs.

- Description
- The yard smells of salt, old ice and diesel. Its main gate sticks on gravel and a folded steel packing band in the track; Len, a woman in orange waterproofs, Vic and Owen get it shut and chained with a hound at the bars. An east wicket leads along the wall past the pump house toward the terminal.
Chapter 3A Place to Sit
- Status
- Four adults stay upstairs with water, lights, a gas ring and a door at the top of the stairs, asking whether boats are running.
