Privacy notice
Last updated 21 October 2026
In short: no cookies, no accounts and no ads. The site counts anonymous reading statistics so the author can see which chapters are read and where readers stop. Nothing it collects says who you are.
Who is responsible
theassay.app is run by the author, who writes as August Tennick. For anything about your data, write to hello@theassay.app.
Reading statistics
When you open a page, the site records:
- which page you opened, and the site or link that brought you there;
- in a chapter, when you pass a quarter, half and three quarters of the way, when you reach the end, and how long the page was on screen;
- your country and continent;
- the type of device, browser, operating system, screen size, language and time zone;
- how fast the page loaded, and any script errors;
- whether the site was opened from a home-screen icon.
This shows the author what is read, helps improve the chapters and finds problems to fix. The legal basis is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
How it stays anonymous
The statistics use no cookies and store nothing on your device. Your IP address is used only for a moment: Cloudflare reads your country from it, and PostHog combines it with your browser’s details into an identifier that changes every day. PostHog does not store the IP address. The author cannot tell who you are, or connect today’s visit with yesterday’s.
Hosting
Cloudflare delivers the site. Like any web host, it handles your IP address and the details of each request to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, under its own privacy policy.
If you write to hello@theassay.app, Cloudflare forwards the message to the author’s mailbox. Your address and message are kept as long as the conversation needs, and are used only to reply.
On your device
Your reading place, progress and display choices are saved in your browser’s storage on your device, so the site can bring you back to where you were. They are never sent anywhere. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them.
Who handles the data
- Cloudflare, Inc.: hosting and email forwarding.
- PostHog, Inc.: reading statistics, kept in its EU cloud in Frankfurt.
Both are US companies and may handle data outside the EU under their own data protection terms.
How long it is kept
The statistics are kept while the site is running. Because they hold no name, IP address or cookie, one reader’s records cannot be picked out from them.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, and you can object to the statistics. Because the statistics are not linked to you, the author usually cannot find your records in them (Article 11 GDPR), but you can stop them being collected:
- Stop counting this device: the site keeps a small note in this browser and sends nothing from it after that. Do this once in each browser you use.
- Start counting again.
- Content blockers that block analytics also work.
